Tuning the Untunable
Many of the frame drums that you find are untunable. That is, they don’t have a hardware system that allows you to adjust the tension on the head. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t adjust the pitch of the drum n you can as long as the drum has a natural skin head.
Because natural hide heads are affected by temperature and humidity, you can use these factors to adjust the tension on the head of your drum. Higher temperatures and lower humidity result in the head becoming more tense, thus producing a higher pitched sound. Likewise, lower temperatures and higher humidity result in a lower pitched sound. In most cases, you find that your drum drops in pitch, sometimes to the point where all you get is a ithudi when you hit it. This is especially true with thinner-headed drums.
I am visiting this blog on the 19th November, 2007 and am quite disappointed to find that it appears to be a dead blog as the last post was way back in August 2006. What happened to it being updated 3 times every 24 hours?
Not overly keen on the Google Adwords being the very first section visible either, you have to scroll to be able to start reading the content.
The content did seem interesting and I like the fact that there were pictures to go with each post. It looks as though it was quite an active blog years ago, although saying that there isn't one comment from any visitors which is odd.
This is definitely the best blog about Drums I've seen. High quality News, Tips & Techniques are available here and best of all -- it updates 3 times every 24 hours.
Other than that, this blog is also interactive, funky & fun with lots of pictures, videos and much more.
This is a blog surely worth visiting over and over again, you should immediately visit it if you're a Drummer or Drum Enthusiast.
